Is it true that Taweel (interpretation) is explicit in Hadith? If it is true then why do some people say it is Bid’ah to engage in Taweel (interpretation)?

Yes, it is true that Taweel (interpretation) is explicit in Hadith. The Hadith is in Sahih Muslim and it teaches Muslims how to interpret Quranic verses and Prophetic Hadith regarding Allah (Most High).

Abu Hurairah (May Allah Most High be pleased with him) said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Allah, the Mighty and Exalted, will say on the Day of Rising, ‘Son of Adam, I was ill and you did not visit Me.’ The man will say, ‘O Lord, how could I visit you in illness when you are the Lord of the worlds?’ He (Most High) will say, ‘Do you not know that my slave so-and-so was ill and you did not visit him? Do you not know that if you had visited him, you would have found Me with him?

O son of Adam, I asked you for food and you did not feed Me?’ He will say, ‘O Lord, how could I feed you when you are the Lord of the worlds?’ He (Most High) will say, ‘Do you not know that My slave so-and-so asked you for food and you did not feed him? Do you not know that if you had fed him, you would have found that with Me?

O son of Adam, I asked you for water and you did not give it to Me.’ He will say, ‘O Lord, how could I give You water when You are the Lord of the worlds?’ He (Most High) will say, ‘My slave so-and-so asked you for water and you did not give it to him. If you had given him water, you would have found that with Me.'” (Muslim, 2569 – 43).

The Hadith above is clear proof that Taweel (interpretation) is not only permitted but actually encouraged in Islam. Despite this fact, there is a group of Muslims who oppose Taweel (interpretation) and actually consider it to be Bid’ah.

To consider Taweel (interpretation) to be Bid’ah is utter misguidance. How could a concept found in authentic Hadith be Bid’ah? However, this is the inevitable result of sectarianism. When people identify with a small, recently established, group rather than the mainstream of Ahl al-Sunnah then such extreme errors become possible and even prevalent.

The Hadith above is authentic without doubt, since it is narrated in Sahih Muslim. All Musnad Hadith in Muslim are Sahih.

The Ummah is unanimously agreed that these two books are Sahih, and that their Hadith narrations must be acted upon. (Imam al-Nawawi, Tadheeb al-Asmaa wa al-Lughaat)

And Allah Most High Knows Best.
