Islamic Text

Several things are narrated for when a person dies, amongst them is

When calamity befalls them, they say, ‘Indeed we belong to Allah and indeed to Him will we return.’ (Surah al-Baqarah, 156).

In the verse above we have been taught to say إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ when faced with a calamity. This includes a loved one passing away. However, it is not limited to such a calamity. Rather one should say this at any calamity.

Some additional words have been narrated in Sahih Muslim (Hadith number 918 -4).

(Sayidah) Umm Salamah (May Allah Most High be pleased with her) said, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, ‘No Muslim suffers a calamity and says, what Allah has commanded him (to say), “Indeed we belong to Allah and indeed to Him will we return.” O Allah, reward me for my affliction and give me something better than it in exchange for it. Except that Allah (Most High) will give him something better than it in exchange for it.’ (Sahih Muslim, 918 -4).

In this Mubarak Hadith we have the words اللهُمَّ أْجُرْنِي فِي مُصِيبَتِي، وَأَخْلِفْ لِي خَيْرًا مِنْهَا added after the words إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ. Therefore, one can add these words to the Dhikr. Other words have been narrated too. See the link below to learn what the holy Prophet ﷺ said when his beloved son Ibrahim passed away.

And Allah Most High Knows Best.
